Supermarkets & Chinese communities in the GTA

Chinese communities has increased over the past 15 years all over the GTA, as have Chinese supermarkets and food businesses. In the GTA many Chinese communities are within the regions of the old Chinatowns as well as the new Chinatowns of Scarborough and Markham. Many chain supermarkets stock imported Chinese goods, fresh fruits and vegetable, and a large selection of packaged food products. In particular, Chinese supermarkets are known for their lower prices and weekly discounted specials and crowded parking lots. One such supermarket is T&T which was a successful Chinese-Canadian business across Canada before it was bought by Loblaw’s.  Other big supermarket chains are owned by the Longtai Group such as FoodyMart that has 2 different locations in the GTA and 3 smaller supermarkets in the Scarborough area.  They are expanding fast, and increasing inventory to attract more mainstream customers.Western supermarkets like Metro have introduced a variety of products such as a large number of rice varieties to compete with Chinese rivals.
